To say these little ones are irresistibly adorable is an understatement. Our 2 & 3 year old exhibition team Cheerubs began back in 2011, basically as a small class that involved motor skills, and a fun introduction to cheerleading. We had about 5-7 kids when we started.
I had always taught older athletes, mostly at the middle school age. So when I was thrown into this role to teach children at the ages of 1-3, it was a whole new experience for me. I had to put the competitive side to rest for 30-45 min. and dig deep into “the land of make believe.”
We had a small room in the gym that echoed like crazy, but it worked! Our “helpers” (which is now our buddy system) were athletes who volunteered their time and who either had some special bond with a Cheerub already or were a sister in the Allstar program.
Since this was our first year, we had no idea what to expect when we took the mat. Our performances consisted of children trying to run up to the front of the mat to smile for their parents so they could take a picture, or some would refuse to perform the routine they had learned and stand there and cry the full 1:00 minute we were on the floor.
There may have even been a child who froze in their spot and realized their tiny little body was on the big Jumbotron for all to see and they were mesmerized. So out of the 5-7 kids, there were maybe 3 who actually performed what we had been working on for months in our little room. But the crowd went nuts! Fast forward 7 years to present day, we now have a Cheerubs AND Darlings program of 28 kids!
If someone had told me back then that this program would grow to what it is today and that I would be teaching this age group I would’ve never believed them. Now to look back and see where those original kids are today makes my heart so happy and I’m honored to have been able to help shape who they are today.
Many of our original Cheerubs are now 7 and 8 years old, competing in our Full year Allstar Program. It is so special to see the young athletes they have grown into and more importantly see the lifelong friendships they have created already, just like I did.
